Description

19th century French gilt wood console table with a breche top. This magnificent presentation piece was designed to be the primary strikepoint of a room. Often situated as a console of a large room, it functions equally well as the center table of an entryway where it is the first piece to greet visitors. Finely carved and formed in ways that almost defy the nature of wood with the fully developed cyma curvature of the leg, the table is proportioned for strength with an oversized apron and a large flowing X-form stretcher that locks the fragile legs into a single unit. The robust display of C-scrolls surrounded by scrolling foliage allows the stretcher to become a most important part of the overall design, this same motif followed through in the acanthus over the scrolling toes of each leg and the central motif of the pierced apron. The knees are beautifully developed with a rocaille carving with the natural ribbing of shells formed into opposing C-scrolls over drapes of anthemion that follow the curve of the knee. A thick and gorgeous original stone top conforms to the undulating serpentine of the table.
