Description
"STILL LIFE WITH FLOWERS AND BIRD’S NEST" AND "STILL LIFE WITH FLOWERS AND FRUIT"
JOHANN PETER PICHLER AFTER JAN VAN HUYSUM
A handsome pair of mezzotints on paper by Austrian printer Johann Peter Pichler circa 1806 after the original painting on copper by Jan van Huysum. They remain in a nearly pristine overall condition. The same prints are carried in the permanent collections of the Winterthur Museum, the British Museum of Art and the National Galleries of Scotland; the original painting for the print with the bird’s nest is also held in the permanent collection of the National Galleries of Scotland. Pichler’s representation of van Huysum’s iconic work was cherished for the exquisite tones and richly textured surfaces. They were completed in Vienna, Austria circa 1806 while the van Huysum paintings were still part of the Czernin collection.
The pair are professionally hung in contemporary Dutch ebony and giltwood frames under museum glass – the frames are of a very high quality and remain in excellent condition.
The same mezzotints are held in the permanent collection of:
