Inaugural Fine and Decorative Arts Sale
Lot 133:
Description
A charming 19th-century French vide-poche end table in the Louis XVI style. The top is of rognon (kidney) form, thoughtfully shaped to accommodate a seated writer. It is finely veneered with intricate marquetry depicting a bouquet of flowers arranged in a precise circular medallion, surrounded by a field of parquetry tiles and enclosed within a brass border. The case is veneered in a warm golden kingwood, offering a striking contrast to the inlay work above. A single drawer, constructed with exceptionally fine hand-cut dovetails, glides open to reveal a fitted interior designed for writing instruments and inkwells. The elegant scrolled legs are pierced and taper gracefully to terminate in petite brass casters. That such a delicate and refined piece has survived in such exceptional condition is truly remarkable.
