Description
French Orientalist Bronze Sculpture of a Janissaire Warrior after a model by Jean-Didier Debut (French, 1824-1893), polychromed and patinated bronze, signed “D. DEBUT”; with editeur cachet “Bronze Garanti au Titre Paris”; applied plaque “JANISSAIRE / PRIX DE ROME”. A French Orientalist bronze depicting a Janissaire warrior standing with musket in hand, modeled with detailed pouches, belt, and period attire. Finished in a reddish-brown patina with polychrome accents, including ruby-red pigment to the cap. Cast after the original model by Jean-Didier Début, father of Marcel Début, both noted for their romanticized interpretations of North African subjects.

Condition: Musket missing the very top of the barrel; scimitar missing from the warrior’s belt; patina wear throughout the garment and the arms of the figure, especially on the back of the sculpture; trace verdigris to the edge of the shoe; cleaned, waxed and ready to place.
