Description

Louis XVI Carved Giltwood Marble Top Pier Table or Console Table, French, late 19th/early 20th century.A very good pier table with a conforming wonderful red and yellow marble top, it features a pierced apron with repeating cresting waves highlighted by acanthus relief. The center of the apron is a brilliant display of symmetrical foliage swirling around rosettes. Turned and tapered columnar stop-fluted legs with acanthus capitals raise the table, each locked in place with a curvy stretcher over toupee feet. Beneath the marble top shows a yellow-wash surface with a dovetailed fore-aft brace locking the front and back of the apron together. The surface is old and attractive with gilding and later inpainting, surface wear throughout and an overall tarnished patina. 41 5/8 H x 18 1/4 D x 53 W

ADDITIONAL NOTES ADDED 7/28/25:

Images of the central rosette and underside square nut added. It is possible the stamped and polychromed metal rosette was added in order to cover up a missing element, though the patina of the surrounding gilding does seem relatively undisturbed. The lack of any other metal elements certainly leaves the possibility open that it was added.

Condition: Old replaced stone top in good condition, probably early-to-mid 20th century with some resin filling to old vein cracks in top; extensive surface wear throughout including gilt loss and inpainted losses, surface blistering, chips and abrasions; some joint separations; top molding on either side of the middle-right leg absent; loss to framed edging of right-most apron panel (upper left corner of panel); notable chip loss to left side of stretcher at the joint.
