Description

Louis XV Cherry Marble Top Center Table, France, probably late 18th century. A fine center table characterized by a veined rose-and-beige thumb-molded marble top projecting over an undulating Cupid’s Bow apron locked with pegged tenon-mortise joints into the cabriole legs terminating in scrolled toes. The crossed stretcher is carved with a floral bas-relief motif in the center and locks the legs firmly together while visually balancing the proportions of the table.

Condition: Old refinished surface with a nice overall silky patina. Scars and blemishes throughout as expected. Vertical shrinkage crack in one leg, not in any way destabilizing; other small shrinkage cracks. Crossed medial support and associated blocking beneath top is a 20th century addition for strength. Due to shifting in the joints over the centuries, the top does not sit perfectly flat and a felt pad was added over one leg to account for this. Marble in very good condition.
