Description

Indian Brass Hookah Base, ca. late 19th/early 20th century

A finely crafted Indian brass hookah base, likely late 19th to early 20th century, featuring a bell-shaped form with sharply everted foot and flaring neck. The surface is meticulously engraved in concentric registers, alternating between geometric bands and latticework fields punctuated by punchwork rosettes. This pierced ornamentation, both decorative and functional, would have allowed cooling airflow when in use. The crispness of the decoration and symmetry of form suggest skilled lathe-turning followed by hand-chasing. An object that reflects both the utilitarian and ceremonial aspects of traditional Indian smoking culture.
