Description
French Louis XVI Style Mahogany Ormolu Mounted Tooled-Leather Bureau Plat Desk by F. Schmidt, Parisian quality, circa late 19th/early 20th century
Lock stamped inside Ch. Leisenroth PARIS F. Schmidt Suc
With a tooled leather writing surface surrounded by a bronze repeating-ring edge mount, the desk features a single center drawer flanked on either side by two smaller drawers, all with original locks (no keys) within elaborate applied ormolu escutcheons featuring a medallion center and outward flowing foliage. The corners are hung with draped garlands in bronze while the sides of the desk are paneled in applied gilt bronze borders and rosettes in the inset corners. Raised over tapered legs terminating in squared sabots.

Condition: In estate found condition with some restorations needed: no key, small veneer losses in numerous areas, veneer losses along legs, applied mahogany trim over two legs missing and over one leg loose and needs to be reapplied, wear/discoloration/abrasions as expected. All legs with damage and veneer loss, one leg more obviously broken at the ankle and repaired poorly at some point. Sturdy, stable and strong.
