Description

French Bronze Sculpture of Cerf a la Branche no. 2 (Stag at the Branch) after the model by Pierre-Jules Mene (French, 1810-1879), patinated bronze, sand-cast, signed in base P.J. MENE.

First published in Mêne’s 1846 catalogue as Cerf mangeant une branche d’arbre no. 2, this variant features a stag reaching upward beneath a split tree trunk over a naturalistic base without edge profile. The surface retains a complex original patina of golden browns, blacks, and subtle red undertones. Casting is highly detailed, with incised hairs, sharply defined antlers, and anatomical precision throughout. Early sand-cast examples of this model are increasingly scarce.
